Tower approved for Ski Hill
ROGER SNODGRASS Monitor Assistant Editor
Commissioners approved a special use permit for a new
communications tower on Pajarito Mountain Wednesday night.
The Planning and Zoning Commission approved plans for a new 180-
foot tower by a 5-3 vote, with two conditions.
The applicant Don Brooks said he had the opportunity to build on a
site at the top of the Ski Hill.
"The main client right now is KNME out of Albuquerque," he said
during his presentation, noting that there is no rentable space on the
mountain and that Los Alamos County has a large number of
member-viewers.
He added that the local affiliate of the Public Broadcasting System
needs to find local broadcast points throughout the state in
preparation for the change to high-definition television, which will
replace analog broadcasts by Jan. 2009.
In response to questions by Assistant County Attorney Charles
Rennick, Brooks said the tower would accommodate several
additional clients.
